The Photographic Archive of Santa Croce is made up of approximately 2,000 items, and is in continual expansion thanks to the new photo campaigns undertaken. The articles are stored in special containers designed for conservation and are organised in line with a topographical criterion.

The black and white reproductions, which are approximately 450 in number and have recently been restored, are the oldest part of the collection and date principally to the photo campaigns carried out by Alinari and Brogi between the end of the nineteenth and the middle of the twentieth century.

The First Cloister in its nineteenth-century layout (Photo Alinari) View of the church of Santa Croce before the construction of the facade by the architect Matas (Photo Alinari, 1847-1854) Interior of the Basilica of Santa Croce during the days of the flood in November 1966 (Photo Epoca)

Many of the images contained in the photographic collection are important documents of works damaged by the flood which are now no longer visible.

The work of ordering, inventorying, cataloguing and digitalisation of the photographic heritage is currently in progress. The photo archive is the subject of a project of digital archiving which is aimed at safeguarding the photographic heritage, and cataloguing it in accordance with the directives of the ICCD (Catalogue and Documentation Institute).
