Guided visits of the restoration site of the High Altar

“Art on Site” in discovery of the Legend of the True Cross

Executed by Agnolo Gaddi – son of Taddeo Gaddi, one of the foremost of Giotto’s pupils – the splendid fourteenth – century fresco cycle of The Legend of the True Cross, which adorns the walls and ceiling of the High Altar can be admired from close up. Visitors have the exceptional opportunity to climb up the scaffolding erected for the restoration of the fresco cycle which extends over a surface area of approximately 1,000 square metres.

The restoration site of the High Altar fresco cycle can be visited, with prior booking, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
On Friday and Saturday the visits are at 10.00, 11.00, 12.00, 14.00, 15.00 and 16.00.
On Sunday at 14.00, 15.00 and 16.00.

Bookings for the visit will be accepted up to Thursday of the same week or, depending on availability, on the same day at the audioguide hire point in the Santa Croce complex (close to the ticket office – Loggia over Largo Bargellini – Via San Giuseppe side).

The visit takes place via audioguide.
Participants will be provided with an audioguide – in five languages – which explains the iconography of the painting, the story of the frescoes, the techniques utilised by Agnolo Gaddi and the problems connected with the conservation and restoration.

Visitors may access the site accompanied by the appointed personnel, with a maximum number of 10 persons per visit.
Visitors must be aged over 12.

The cost of the visit is € 10, and covers only the visit to the restoration site.

The proceeds from this initiative will contribute to the funding of the restoration, the cost of which has been estimated at around three million Euro, and is scheduled to be completed by 2010.
